Holy CATS, xkcd is amazing. Why am I just NOW figuring this out?

I LOLed. A lot.

Also, I TOTALLY want to do BOTH of these. You guys are with me, right? [info]jose_chica13</lj> , I'm looking in your direction, especially when it comes to the first one :D

Courtesy of xkcd.com. Check 'em out if you are as woefully ignorant of their awesomeness as I was.

In other news, I am wanderlusting like mad. MAD. I don't exactly hate it when this happens (though I wish I knew why it chooses to strike when it does,) but it is inconvenient when I find myself longing for a different piece of sky, even if only for a weekend. Especially odd given that I just got home from from Texas! Yet... here I am, looking at airfare and wondering where I might like to go. Stupid itchy feet.

Bless facebook. I clicked on a friend's posted link, which took me to a page on the BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS 20th ANNUAL GYPSY OF THE YEAR COMPETITION!* It was a description of that evening's entertainment, a portion of which I simply must share with you:

'Equus offered star Daniel Radcliffe performing an original song, written by Mr. Radcliffe, titled “The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Neigh” that included the show’s “horses” dancing and cavorting with their young star.'

.....

Dear Daniel Radcliffe,

"The Love That Dares Not Speak Its Neigh"!?! Seriously?? Seriously???

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!

Sir, I suddenly love you. Marry me. Through all the hardships we could face (the age difference, the cultural differences, the fact that I would inadvertently call you 'Harry' in the middle of intimate moments, etc.) our love of TERRIBLE puns will surely keep us together!

Sincerely,
Me

P.S.- If you also enjoy inserting song lyrics (I'm partial to sappy love songs and 80's pop music as they are wonderfully ridiculous, but I'm quite flexible) into everyday conversation with a straight face, allowing the other person to say the next line back to you and so on until you both collapse with laughter, so much the better!

....

Ahem. Anyways, it was apparently quite a jaunty little tune. The shirtless kick line looked particularly festive. Oh, did I forget to mention? There are pictures: http://broadwaycares.org/events/gypsy.cfm

Yeeeeeeah, I would seriously recommend heading over there to check it out. That's all I'm saying, other than BLESS YOU PJZ, and bless facebook for making my night a little lulz-ier

*Emphasis not mine, though it is a worthy cause seriously deserving of all caps.

These are, by and large, alternately hysterical and touching (but mostly hysterical).

http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/electionvideos/tp/top-election-web-videos.01.htm

Also:

O, sweep of stars over Harlem streets,
O, little breath of oblivion that is night.
A city building
To a mother's song.
A city dreaming
To a lullaby.
Reach up your hand, dark boy, and take a star.
Out of the little breath of oblivion
That is night,
Take just
One star.

~Langston Hughes

Hughes is really the poet of the day, at least for me. Witness:

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.

Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--

I, too, am America.

And especially

Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed--
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.

(There's never been equality for me,
Nor freedom in this "homeland of the free.")

Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?
And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,
I am the Negro bearing slavery's scars.
I am the red man driven from the land,
I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek--
And finding only the same old stupid plan
Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.

I am the young man, full of strength and hope,
Tangled in that ancient endless chain
Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land!
Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need!
Of work the men! Of take the pay!
Of owning everything for one's own greed!

I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil.
I am the worker sold to the machine.
I am the Negro, servant to you all.
I am the people, humble, hungry, mean--
Hungry yet today despite the dream.
Beaten yet today--O, Pioneers!
I am the man who never got ahead,
The poorest worker bartered through the years.

Yet I'm the one who dreamt our basic dream
In the Old World while still a serf of kings,
Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true,
That even yet its mighty daring sings
In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned
That's made America the land it has become.
O, I'm the man who sailed those early seas
In search of what I meant to be my home--
For I'm the one who left dark Ireland's shore,
And Poland's plain, and England's grassy lea,
And torn from Black Africa's strand I came
To build a "homeland of the free."

The free?

Who said the free? Not me?
Surely not me? The millions on relief today?
The millions shot down when we strike?
The millions who have nothing for our pay?
For all the dreams we've dreamed
And all the songs we've sung
And all the hopes we've held
And all the flags we've hung,
The millions who have nothing for our pay--
Except the dream that's almost dead today.

O, let America be America again--
The land that never has been yet--
And yet must be--the land where every man is free.
The land that's mine--the poor man's, Indian's, Negro's, ME--
Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose--
The steel of freedom does not stain.
From those who live like leeches on the people's lives,
We must take back our land again,
America!

O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath--
America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain--
All, all the stretch of these great green states--
And make America again!

I am SO happy. There are no words.

I am in SUCH a good mood from this weekend! More on this later, as I rather feel like sharing. At the moment, I must go get ready for work tonight. We're in previews, opening... this weekend? Or the next, I'm not sure. I probably should know. Haven't seen the show yet myself, but if it's any good then I'll be pimping it here and on facebook.

Also, making iced coffee with yesterday's leftover coffee frozen into cubes is one of my more brilliant ideas.

So I'm like, 90% positive that my flight to Chicago tomorrow evening will be canceled; I'm just waiting for American Airlines to make it official. Thus, I will likely be waiting out Hurricane Ike here in DFW. It promises to be one bitchin' storm, so I may or may not have internet/phone connectivity 'till Sunday or Monday. I just wanted to drop a quick note here so you guys would know WHY I was incommunicado... and so you wouldn't worry. I'm nice like that :-D

Love love!

The Japanese haiku poet Basho once wrote, "Old pond / a frog jumps / the sound of water." Try writing some of your own haikus about the little things in your life. A haiku generally consists of a five-syllable line, a seven-syllable line and a second five-syllable line. You can also use any combination of ten-to-fourteen syllables.

Dear WFAA Dallas Female News Anchors,

I'm curious... is the makeup budget so tight that they can only afford one tube of lipstick down at the station? Because you are all wearing the most GODAWFUL shade of bright red I've ever seen. It's frighteningly close to this:

GIRLS. That shade is hideously unflattering on every one of you (except Cynthia Izaguirre, who manages to rock that bright red lip without looking like a kid who got into Mommy's Halloween makeup kit.) And it's MATTE bright red! Considering the nature of your work, aren't you supposed to be somewhat aware of current trends? Do you ever watch TV? Pick up a magazine? It's called GLOSS. It's light and moisturizing and best of all, it doesn't look as though you have to apply it with a trowel!

Ladies, do yourself a favor: bring a tube from home on Monday. For your sake, and the sake of my retinas.

Sincerely,

Me
